Roots Vacuum Pump (Roots Pump) refers to a variable volume vacuum pump with two blade-shaped rotors rotating synchronously in opposite directions. Structure of Roots Vacuum Pump:
How the two rotors of Roots vacuum pump are arranged in the pump body determines the overall structure of the pump. There are generally three schemes for the general layout of Roots vacuum pumps at home and abroad.
1. Vertical: The axes of two rotors are installed horizontally, but the plane formed by the axes of two rotors is perpendicular to the horizontal plane. With this structure, the intake and exhaust ports of the pump are horizontally arranged. It is convenient to assemble and connect the pipelines. But its disadvantage is that the center of gravity of the pump is too high and its stability is poor at high speed, so there are not many pumps with this structure except small size ones.
2. Horizontal: The axes of two rotors are installed horizontally, and the plane formed by the axes of two rotors is horizontally oriented. The intake port of the pump with this structure is above the pump and the exhaust port is below the pump (and vice versa). The lower exhaust ports are generally connected in the horizontal direction, and the direction of intake and exhaust is perpendicular to each other. The exhaust port is connected with a three-way pipe to open in two directions, one end is connected with the exhaust pipe, and the other end is used when it is dead or connected with the bypass valve. The structure is characterized by low center of gravity and good stability at high speed. Large and medium-sized pumps at home and abroad mostly use this type of structure.
3. Vertical axis type: The two rotor axes of some roots pumps abroad are installed vertically with the horizontal plane. The assembly clearance of the structure is easy to control, the assembly of the rotor is convenient and the area is small, but the assembly and disassembly of gears and other transmission mechanisms are inconvenient, and the lubrication device is also complex.

Advantages of Roots Vacuum Pump:
1. There is no gas compression in the pump chamber, and there is a gap between the moving parts. It is insensitive to dust and water vapor in the suction gas, so condensable vapor can be extracted.
2. The moving parts in the pump chamber need not be lubricated with oil, which can avoid the pollution of oil vapor to the vacuum system and is beneficial to obtaining oil-free vacuum.
3. No need for intake and exhaust valves, simple structure, low noise, no contact between moving parts in the pump chamber, not easy to damage, low maintenance costs.
4. Within a wide pressure range, it has a stable and large pumping speed, and can rapidly discharge the sudden gas, which makes up for the shortcomings of oil seal mechanical pumps and diffusion pumps, and is very suitable for mechanical booster pumps. In the case of water seal or oil seal, it can directly drain air to vacuum, and it is also suitable for large pumping speed crude vacuum pump.
5. The design is advanced, the structure is reasonable, there are clearances between the rotors and between the rotors and the pump body, and they are not in contact with each other. They do not need lubrication, and have small friction loss. They can obtain larger pumping speed with lower power, which has remarkable energy-saving effect.
6. The rotor has good geometric symmetry and works smoothly. It can obtain large pumping speed by increasing the rotational speed, thus achieving compact structure, small volume and light weight.
7. Quick start-up, can reach the limit vacuum in a short time.
Shortcomings of Roots Vacuum Pump:
1. The effect of hydrogen extraction is not as good as that of oil booster pump, and the amount of back diffusion is large.
2. Because the surface of the rotor is a curved cylindrical surface with complex shape, it is difficult to inspect and manufacture because of its high requirement for machining.
